Solar Bears rally, earn point in 4-3 OT loss

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Down 3-0 in the second period, the Orlando Solar Bears (4-8-3-0) scored three straight goals to force overtime, but ultimately fell in the extra period to the Jacksonville Icemen (3-9-1-0) by a 4-3 score on Wednesday night at Veterans Memorial Arena.

ON THE SCORESHEET

  • J.J. Piccinich extended his goal-scoring streak to three games (3g) when he beat Colton Phinney at 3:17 of the second period. Piccinich also drew the high-sticking double-minor penalty against Jacksonville’s Christopher Dienes at 6:23 of the third period that led to Max Novak’s game-tying power-play goal.
  • J.C. Campagna fired home his first goal in a Solar Bears uniform at 17:15 of the second period on a tic-tac-toe play that ended in Campagna snapping a shot from the slot past the stick of Phinney.
  • Martins Dzierkals extended his point streak to three games (3g-1a) with the primary assist on Campagna’s goal.
  • Joshua Winquist earned the secondary assist on Campagna’s goal to push his assist streak to a franchise-record eight games, passing the franchise mark set by Eric Faille last season. Winquist has logged 12 assists dating back to Nov. 7 vs. Greenville. The assist on Campagna’s goal was also Winquist’s 100th career pro assist. Additionally, Winquist now has an eight-game point streak (3g-12a).
  • Max Novak tied the game with a power-play goal at 6:37 of the third period – a rebound from Winquist popped out to Novak at the left circle and he fired the puck past Phinney.
  • Mackenzie Skapski took the overtime loss with 37 saves on 41 shots against. Skapski’s 37 stops set a new season-high by a Solar Bears netminder, passing Kasimir Kaskisuo’s 35 saves on Oct. 22 at Allen (4-3 overtime win).

  • Campagna, Dzierkals and Mike Monfredo each led Orlando with five shots on goal.
  • Orlando has earned five of a possible six points over its last three games. The Norfolk Admirals also suffered a 4-3 loss to Florida tonight, giving the Solar Bears a two-point cushion against Norfolk for fifth place in the South Division, with two games in hand.
