Orlando obtains defenseman’s rights from Rapid City
ORLANDO, Fla. – The Orlando Solar Bears have acquired the rights to defenseman Alex Mikulovich from the Rapid City Rush in exchange for forward Darik Angeli.
Mikulovich (mik-KOO-luh-VITCH), 21, began his rookie season in 2016-17 with the Beijing-based Kunlun Red Star in Russia’s Kontinental Hockey League, where he appeared in seven games and registered six penalty minutes. The 6-foot-3, 200-pound defenseman made his way to North America in late December, and finished the campaign with Rapid City, skating in 36 games while tallying six points (1g-5a) and 41 penalty minutes.
Prior to turning pro, Mikulovich played three seasons of major junior for the Ontario Hockey League’s Niagara IceDogs, logging 34 points (11g-23a) and 172 penalty minutes in 170 games.
The native of Chelyabinsk, Russia also represented his country at the 2016 IIHF World Junior Championships held in Helsinki, Finland, where he notched one assist in seven games and helped Russia capture a silver medal.
Angeli, 26, was originally acquired by Orlando from the Tulsa Oilers on Jan. 2 and skated in 36 regular season games with the Solar Bears, recording 20 points (10g-10a) and 14 penalty minutes. He added three assists and four penalty minutes in seven postseason matches.
