ORLANDO, Fla. — The Orlando Solar Bears, proud affiliate of the NHL’s Toronto Maple Leafs and AHL’s Toronto Marlies, have announced that the club has agreed to terms with rookie forward Coltyn Sanderson for the 2016-17 season.
Sanderson, 25, is set to begin his professional career after enjoying a breakout year in his final season with the University of North Dakota in 2015-16, recording 12 points (7g-5a) and eight penalty minutes in 35 games, while helping the Fighting Hawks program capture the 2016 NCAA championship in Tampa.
“Coltyn Sanderson emerged as a key contributor for his college team last season, and his hard work paid off with a championship,” Solar Bears head coach Anthony Noreen said. “We anticipate him being a solid two-way player with an elite work ethic that we can use in any situation.”
In 44 career collegiate games, the 6-foot-1, 200-pound forward logged 14 points (7g-7a) and 10 penalty minutes.
“I’m thrilled to join the Solar Bears for my rookie season,” Sanderson said. “The combination of the personnel in the organization and the tremendous community support has me extremely excited to get to Orlando and get the season started.”
The native of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan is no stranger to the City Beautiful, as his father Mike Sanderson concluded a 13-year pro hockey career with the Orlando Seals of the ACHL and WHA2 in the early 2000s.
