First Solar Bears goalie in team history to receive honor after dominant November
ORLANDO, Fla. – The Orlando Solar Bears are proud to announce that goaltender Ryan Massa has been selected as the Warrior Hockey ECHL Goaltender of the Month for November, becoming the first Solar Bears netminder in the history of the organization to receive Goaltender of the Month honors.
Massa, 26, went 6-1-1 with a 2.48 goals-against average and a save percentage of .964 in eight appearances during the month.
Massa allowed two goals or less in five of his seven starts in November – including in each of his last three appearances – and made at least 31 saves on four occasions.
The netminder stopped a career-high 44 shots in Orlando’s 2-1 overtime loss at Greenville on Nov. 3. Massa then tied Garret Sparks for the most wins in franchise history with his 26th career victory for the Solar Bears on Nov. 26 when he made 31 saves in Orlando’s 5-2 victory over Brampton.
A native of Littleton, Colo., Massa has appeared in 10 games for the Solar Bears this season posting a record of 7-2-1 with a 2.68 goals-against average and a save percentage of .915. In 47 career games for Orlando, he has an overall mark of 26-15-3 with two shutouts, a 2.86 goals-against average and a save percentage of .915. He also has one victory in his lone American Hockey League appearance with Orlando’s affiliate, the Toronto Marlies, a 16-save effort in which he surrendered only one goal in a 3-1 decision at Syracuse.
Prior to turning pro, Massa played four seasons at the University of Nebraska-Omaha seeing action in 75 career games and posting a record of 32-27-9 with four shutouts, a 2.47 goals-against average and a save percentage of .917. In 2014-15, he helped guide the Mavericks to the first Frozen Four appearance in school history and was named to the NCHC Second All-Star Team.
